Juneau, Alaska

Kosher Cruise Port Guide

Juneau is Alaska's capital city and one of the most popular ports on any Alaska cruise. Nestled between towering mountains and the Gastineau Channel, Juneau is only accessible by air or sea — there are no roads in or out. This remote setting means you're surrounded by raw Alaskan wilderness the moment you step off the ship.

Highlights

  • Mendenhall Glacier — A massive glacier just 12 miles from downtown Juneau. Visit the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center for close-up views, or hike the trails to Nugget Falls, a thundering waterfall at the glacier's edge.
  • Whale Watching — Juneau is one of the best places in the world for humpback whale watching. From May through September, humpbacks feed in the nutrient-rich waters of the Inside Passage. Book a boat excursion for near-guaranteed sightings.
  • Tracy Arm Fjord — A dramatic fjord with twin glaciers (Sawyer Glaciers), towering ice walls, and floating icebergs. Available as a full-day excursion from Juneau.
  • Mount Roberts Tramway — A gondola ride from the cruise port to 1,800 feet elevation with panoramic views of Juneau, the channel, and Douglas Island. Hiking trails at the top.
  • Downtown Juneau — Walkable from the cruise port. Browse shops on South Franklin Street, visit the Alaska State Capitol, and try local smoked salmon (check packaging for kosher certification).
  • Dog Sledding on a Glacier — A unique Juneau excursion: helicopter to a glacier, then mush with a team of sled dogs. A once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Tips for Kosher Travelers

  • Eat all meals on the ship — There are no kosher food options in Juneau. Have breakfast at the Solarium Bistro before heading ashore, and plan your excursion timing around lunch.
  • Pack layers and snacks — Juneau temperatures average 55-65°F in summer with frequent rain. Bring a waterproof jacket, warm layers, and sealed kosher snacks. See our packing list.
  • Rain is normal — Juneau averages 220+ days of rain per year. Don't let it stop you — the scenery is spectacular rain or shine.
  • Book excursions early — Whale watching and Mendenhall Glacier tours sell out quickly, especially for large cruise ships. Book through the cruise line or independently well in advance.
  • Walking distance attractions — Downtown Juneau and the Mount Roberts Tramway are walkable from the cruise terminal. No taxi needed for a half-day of exploration.

Port Guide

Juneau is a pier port — your ship docks directly at the Egan Drive Cruise Ship Terminal or the AJ Dock, both within easy walking distance of downtown. The port area has a visitor information center, shops, and tour operator desks.

Taxis and shuttle buses run from the port to Mendenhall Glacier (about 20 minutes). Most cruise line excursions pick up directly at the port. US dollars and credit cards are used everywhere — no currency exchange needed.
