Santorini, Greece

Kosher Cruise Port Guide

Santorini is one of the most iconic destinations in the world — a crescent-shaped volcanic island in the Aegean Sea, famous for its dramatic caldera cliffs, whitewashed buildings with blue domes, and legendary sunsets. It's the crown jewel of any Greek Isles cruise.

Highlights

  • Oia Village — The postcard-perfect village perched on the northern tip of the caldera. Narrow lanes, blue-domed churches, art galleries, and the most famous sunset viewpoint in Greece.
  • Fira (Thira) — The island's capital, directly above the tender port. Shops, restaurants, museums, and stunning caldera views. Accessible by cable car, donkey, or 588 steps from the port.
  • Red Beach — A dramatic volcanic beach with towering red cliffs. A short walk from Akrotiri village.
  • Akrotiri Archaeological Site — A Minoan Bronze Age settlement preserved under volcanic ash, often called the "Pompeii of the Aegean."
  • Volcanic Hot Springs — Boat excursions from the old port to the active volcanic island in the center of the caldera, with warm sulfur springs for swimming.
  • Wine Tasting — Santorini is known for its Assyrtiko white wine. Several wineries offer tastings with caldera views (check for kosher wine availability).

Tips for Kosher Travelers

  • Eat on the ship — Kosher food is not available in Santorini. Have a full breakfast before going ashore and return for dinner.
  • Bring snacks — Pack sealed kosher snacks for the day. It's easy to spend 4-6 hours on the island. See our packing list.
  • Fruits and packaged items — Fresh fruits, packaged nuts, and sealed drinks from local shops can supplement your snack supply.
  • This is a tender port — The ship anchors in the caldera and small boats ferry guests to the old port at Fira. From there, take the cable car (recommended), walk the 588 steps, or ride a donkey up the cliff.
  • Wear sturdy shoes — Oia and Fira have cobblestone streets and steep paths. Comfortable walking shoes are essential.
  • Book excursions early — Santorini is a high-demand port. Popular excursions (especially to Oia) sell out quickly.

Port Guide

Santorini is a tender port — your ship anchors in the caldera and small boats (tenders) take you to the old port of Fira at the base of the cliffs. From there, you have three options to reach Fira town at the top: the cable car (fast, ~2 minutes, small fee), the 588 zigzag steps (free but strenuous), or donkey ride (traditional but not recommended for animal welfare reasons).

A taxi or bus from Fira to Oia takes about 20 minutes. Budget your time carefully — allow at least 2 hours for Oia and factor in return travel and tender wait times.
